What is a kea?

A Kea is a native New Zealand bird. The Kea has green wings and super strong beaks and big wing span. Measuring around 48 cm in length, it is mostly green with a brilliant orange under its wings. The kea has a large narrow curved grey-brown upper beak.

Where kea live.

The kea lives in Fiorland on the road up to milford sound you can see them chewing tires, pillows, car parts and even metal!. The kea are the only birds who live in the mountians or alpine terrain and are related to the parrot family.

Danger! Beware! the threats to the kea.

Some kea are killed by falcons, stoats and rats. Many kea die of starvation during the cold and freezing winters. Most kea are killed by farmers who shoot poison or trap them to stop them attacking sheep.

Home sweet Home

Kea make their nests between large rocks or in the hollows and roots of old trees. Their nests are at the end of a long trail or tunnel. Female kea build the nest using dried moss, ferns, leaves and rotten wood.
